Which phones can I use a Locata Tag with?
An iPhone or iPad running iOS 14.5 or later and signed in to iCloud. The tag registers in Apple Find My as an "Other Item", exactly the way Apple’s own accessories do. It will not pair with an Android phone at all, so please do not order it for one.
Is there an app to download or a monthly fee?
Neither. Everything happens in the Find My app that came with your iPhone, and finding your things through the Apple Find My network is free, there is no account to make, no trial and no subscription waiting a year down the line.
Can I pack one in my suitcase for a holiday?
Yes, and it is the most common reason people buy one. The Find My network works wherever passing Apple devices do, so a bag that ends up in the wrong city still reports back. Airlines are fine with these tags in hold luggage; the coin cell is well under the limits.
How do I know I have left something behind?
Turn on "Notify When Left Behind" in Find My and your iPhone alerts you as the tag drops out of range, with the last place it was seen pinned on the map. That usually means walking back a street, rather than working out where you were three hours ago.
How close do I need to be to make it ring, and how loud is it?
Bluetooth reaches up to 60 m / 200 ft for ringing the tag yourself, and it sounds at 80–100 dB. Further away than that, the Find My network keeps showing its last known position on the map instead.
Does the battery run out, and is a spare in the box?
It runs for up to 2 years on the CR2032 coin cell fitted at the factory, then you twist the back off and drop in a new one, they cost a couple of pounds in any supermarket. There are no spare batteries in the box: you get 2 Locata Tag trackers, 2 key rings and a plain-English manual.
What happens if a stranger finds the item first?
Put the tag into Lost Mode and anyone who holds a phone to it can see a message and a way to contact you, passed through Apple Find My. Your phone number and your address stay hidden from them the whole time.
Can anyone track me or see where my things are?
No. The MFi certified chip means location data is end-to-end encrypted through Apple Find My, so only your Apple Account can see it, not us, and not the manufacturer. Apple’s unwanted-tracking alerts work with these tags too, so a tag travelling with someone who does not own it will warn them.
Will it cope with rain, mud and the school run?
It is rated IP67: dust-tight, and sealed against rain, spilled drinks and a short dip in water. At 36.3 × 36.3 × 9 mm and around 10 g it is light enough to hang off a nursery bag without anyone noticing it is there.
