Can you put a tracker in hold luggage? The UK rules
Can you put a tracker in hold luggage on a flight out of the UK? Yes, and you can stop worrying about it, but the reassurance is worth understanding rather than just accepting, because the rules that govern it are about batteries, not about tracking, and the one genuine restriction catches people out in a different way entirely. Here is what the guidance says, where the 2022 scare came from, and how to pack a tag so nobody at the desk asks you a question.
Can you put a tracker in hold luggage? The short answer
Yes. Bluetooth item tags are permitted in checked baggage by every major carrier flying from the UK, and the aviation regulators have said so directly when asked.
The reason is battery chemistry rather than policy generosity. Almost all the anxiety about electronics in the hold concerns lithium-ion cells, the rechargeable kind in power banks, e-cigarettes and laptops, which store a great deal of energy and can fail spectacularly. A coin cell is a different animal: a non-rechargeable lithium metal cell containing a fraction of a gram of lithium, with roughly the stored energy of a wristwatch. It is closer to the battery in a car key than to a power bank, and it is treated accordingly.
Where the "ban" story came from
In October 2022, Lufthansa appeared to say that tracking devices had to be switched off in checked bags. The story went around the world in about a day, and it was wrong within two.
Lufthansa clarified its position almost immediately, stating that tracking devices with very low battery and transmission power in checked luggage do not pose a safety risk and are allowed on its flights, and adding that the German aviation authority shared its assessment. EASA, the European regulator, said its rules neither banned nor mandated such devices, the decision sat with each airline. In the United States, the FAA confirmed AirTags were permitted, treating them like any other low-powered wireless device.
Four years on, the direction of travel is unmistakable. Airlines are not tolerating trackers; they are building around them. Since Apple introduced Share Item Location in iOS 18.2, a long list of carriers
- thirty-six by MacRumors' January 2026 count, British Airways and Aer Lingus among them, will accept a live location link attached to a mishandled baggage report. It is difficult to square that with any notion that the devices are unwelcome in the hold.
What the CAA guidance actually restricts
It is worth being precise, because the UK Civil Aviation Authority's published packing advice does not mention trackers at all. What it does say is aimed squarely at rechargeable batteries:
Always keep vapes and power banks with you in the cabin. Never pack them in checked luggage, they can overheat and cause a fire.
The same guidance asks you to carry spare batteries in the cabin, limits you to two power banks per person, tells you not to recharge them on board, and says damaged or swollen batteries should never be carried at all. There is also a line worth reading twice: if your cabin bag is taken from you at the gate to be put in the hold, you are asked to remove batteries and lithium-powered devices first.
None of that describes a sealed item tag with a coin cell fitted inside it, but it does explain the shape of the rules. Spare and loose batteries travel with you. Devices with batteries installed are the ordinary case. If you are carrying replacement CR2032 cells for a long trip, put them in your cabin bag, in their packaging or taped at the terminals, and not loose in a suitcase with your keys.
How to pack a tag so nobody asks
- Leave it switched on and inside the bag. There is no requirement to disable it, and a tag that is off is a tag that cannot help you.
- Put it inside the case rather than on the handle. An external tag gets torn off by a belt and tells anyone walking past that the bag is worth opening.
- Keep it shallow. A side pocket or the top of the packing beats the bottom of the case. Bluetooth is a low-power radio and it does not enjoy fighting through a fortnight of clothes.
- Carry spare coin cells in the cabin, if you carry any at all.
- Check your own airline's page if you are flying with a smaller operator. Policies are set carrier by carrier and it takes thirty seconds.
What to expect once the hold doors close
Manage your expectations and you will avoid an unnecessary panic at baggage reclaim.
An aircraft hold is an aluminium box surrounded by other aluminium boxes, so nothing is relayed while you are in the air. The location you see when you land is normally the last one confirmed on the apron before departure, and it will jump forward the moment your bag is back in a building with people in it. A gap of several hours in the timeline is the system working exactly as designed. Read the timestamp before you read the pin.
Nor is there an arrow to follow. Ultra Wideband Precision Finding is not part of a tag at this end of the market, so what you get is a map, a time, and a sound when you are close.
How a Locata Tag travels
A Locata Tag runs on a single CR2032, the same coin cell as a bathroom scale, which is why it packs without a second thought and why you can replace it yourself in about ten seconds when it eventually runs down after up to two years. It is IP67 sealed against the rain that hold baggage is routinely left standing in, and at 36.3 mm square and 9 mm thick it disappears into a side pocket.
Because it is MFi certified for the Find My network, it registers in the Find My app on your iPhone under Items rather than in an app of ours, which is also what makes it eligible for a shared location link if your airline accepts one. When the bag is finally close but buried in a pile, Play Sound gets 80–100 dB out of it from up to 60 m away. iPhone and iPad only, iOS 14.5 and up, there is no Android version.
Two tags per box and free UK delivery, so the cabin bag gets one as well. take a look before you fly.
